The Future Fund today announced the appointment of Sue Brake as Chief Investment Officer.

Ms Brake has served as acting Chief Investment Officer since 1 July 2020 following the appointment of former Chief Investment Officer Dr Raphael Arndt as the organisation’s Chief Executive Officer.

As Chief Investment Officer Ms Brake will have overall responsibility for developing and implementing the investment strategy of the Future Fund and five other public asset funds which together are valued at $210bn. She will also be a member of the organisation’s Management Committee.

Hon Peter Costello AC, Chairman of the Future Fund Board of Guardians said: “Sue is a globally recognised investment leader. Markets and economies are operating in very unusual circumstances and her experience and expertise will be invaluable as we navigate this environment and seek to maximise long-term risk-adjusted returns.”

Dr Arndt, Chief Executive Officer said: “Sue has added enormous value to our thinking and processes since she joined us. She combines deep understanding of our culture and how we work with new perspectives and ideas. She brings greater diversity to our thinking and will continue to enhance the quality of our decision-making.”

Ms Sue Brake, Chief Investment Officer, said: “Changes in markets and economies that were evolving gradually have accelerated rapidly over the last year. Alongside Ms Brake’s appointment the Future Fund has recently made several other senior appointments that add further depth and expertise to the investment team.

Ms Genevieve Murray commenced her role as Head of Listed Equities in early November 2020. She was previously Head of Australian Equities with AMP Capital.

Mr Doug Cain has been appointed Head of Unlisted Property. He was previously a Senior Director with Canada’s PSP Investments in Montreal.

Mr Kelvin Mak has been appointed as a Director in the Private Equity team. Kelvin joins the Future Fund from Navis Capital Partners.


Sue Brake

Sue Brake joined the Future Fund as Deputy Chief Investment Officer, Portfolio Strategy, in June 2019 and in that role was responsible for economic and capital market analysis, emerging markets, dynamic beta management and portfolio construction.

Sue joined the Future Fund from Willis Towers Watson where she was Head of Strategic Advisory. Prior to this she worked as senior investment strategist at the New Zealand Superannuation Fund.

Sue holds a Masters in Psychology from Canterbury University as well as Bachelor degrees in Mathematics, Computer Science and English Literature.
